Information for foster parents

You do not have to be a German Citizen to become a foster parent. What matters most is that you are able to provide the child with a stable and secure home environment in order to promote his or her healthy development.

It is important that you have permission to stay in Germany in order to ensure that you are able to care for the child for the long-term. A temporary residence permit will only be acceptable under exceptional circumstances.

We welcome people from different cultures and religious orientations as they reflect the variety of backgrounds that foster children come from. This allows us to take into consideration the ethnic and religious origins when finding the right family for a particular child.

In my foster family I learned how to be a child. I was able to play and they even asked me if I wanted to eat something.

You don’t have to be married to become a foster parent. Single people and same sex couples are also allowed to foster.

In the case of long-term foster care there should be an appropriate age gap between the foster child and the foster parents. However, at 45 years old you can still foster a baby or toddler.

Children need space to play and learn. Therefore you need to be able to provide enough living space in your home to foster a child. At the beginning, a child does not necessarily need to have his or her own bedroom.
The assessment process and subsequent placement of a child can take up to nine months.

You should live in secure economic conditions. We expect that your financial security is independent of the fostering allowance. Foster parents get paid a monthly allowance to cover the cost of child rearing in addition to living expenses.

Right from the beginning we felt it would be helpful to give a child a home, who comes from a similar cultural background as we do

To prepare you for the task of becoming a foster parent you will attend the “Fostering School,” followed by an assessment process and a foster care qualification program. You will receive professional support before, during and after a child has been placed with you.

Dear prospective foster parents

German language skills are a basic requirement in order to qualify as a foster parent. To go through the assessment process and work with the youth welfare service, birth parents, schools and early childhood institutions, you need to be able to speak and understand German. It can be very helpful for the children and their birth families if foster parents speak the same native language and share their cultural heritage.

Through life with my foster son Paul I became closer to the German language and culture in Berlin.
